I hated this book. I was so excited to sit down and read this novel. All of the reviews that I had seen were good and the overall rating was excellent. As I started reading the book, I kept wondering what everyone saw in this story that I couldn't see. I kept wait for the book to hook me. I wanted to get to the great part. At 56% I still haven't found anything that makes me want to keep reading so I have decided to move on to a book I might actually like.
I hated almost everything about this book. I hate the characters. Alexa is a doormat and a stupid doormat at that. Alexa wants more than just sex with Caine but she still agrees to it hoping he may eventually want more. She lets Caine control her life when she goes to work for him. When he says jump, she jumps and doesn't bother to stand up for herself. She even lets her grandfather get away without publicly acknowledging their relationship.
Caine is an ass without a single thing that makes him attractive. He blames Alexa for the things her father has done. He is controlling and when he hires Alexa, he makes sure to make it so that she cannot have a life because of his demands. When Alexa wants time off work to go buy a dress, he assumes that he should be the one to pick it out. When he sees her at a baseball game, he wants to know why she didn't tell him she would be there never mind the fact that he has invited a whole private box of people but not her. When Alexa speaks up for herself, Caine says that she has a smart mouth.
Caine's elderly neighbor and Henry were the only somewhat likeable characters in the whole story and it just wasn't enough. I didn't feel any chemistry between Caine and Alexa and I found the sex scenes to be boring. To be honest, there were a lot of things about this book that remind me of Fifty Shades of Grey and I didn't care for that book either. I really tried to finish this book but I just got to a point that I could not take it anymore and I simply don't care what happens. When I read a story, I need to find something that will make me want to keep reading and I just cannot find it in the book.
I cannot recommend this book to anyone. There are just too many wonderful books out there to spend any time reading about an ass and his doormat.
I received an advance reader edition of this book from Penguin Group via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.
